Patria and Rheinmetall unveil new mortar system
At the Defence Vehicle Dynamics (DVD2024) exhibition in Millbrook, UK, on September 18, Finnish-based Patria and German defense conglomerate Rheinmetall showcased their latest joint innovation, the Boxer Armoured Mortar Variant.
According to a press release, this prototype integrates Patria’s state-of-the-art NEMO 120mm turreted mortar system onto the Boxer platform.
The new variant is designed to deliver increased firepower, mobility, and protection to modern armed forces. The vehicle features a high rate of fire, direct and indirect fire capabilities, and the ability to fire while on the move. The NEMO 120mm turreted mortar system can deliver up to 10 rounds per minute, with the ability to carry out Multiple Rounds Simultaneous Impact (MRSI) strikes, where up to five rounds hit the target at once. The system also offers a maximum range of 10 kilometers, allowing operators to engage targets at a distance while remaining in protected positions.
“We are excited to present this innovative Armoured Mortar Variant at the DVD2024 exhibition,” said Rebecca Richards, Deputy CEO at Rheinmetall Vehicle Systems International. “This collaboration with Patria underscores our shared commitment to advancing military technology and providing the UK’s armed forces with the best possible equipment.”
Patria’s Senior Vice President for Market Area Europe, Hugo Vanbockryck, emphasized the importance of the collaboration: “The Armoured Mortar Variant represents a significant leap forward in battlefield capabilities. We are proud to partner with Rheinmetall in delivering this state-of-the-art solution to our customers.”
The Armoured Mortar Variant is expected to enhance the British Army’s fire support capabilities, providing both mobile and protected firepower in hostile environments.
