MOSKIT LR is A Next-Generation Anti-Tank Missile System at MSPO 2024

At the MSPO 2024 (International Defense Industry Exhibition) in Kielce, Poland, one of the highlights was the presentation of the MOSKIT LR (Long Range), a state-of-the-art anti-tank guided missile system (ATGM). This system, developed by the Military Institute of Armament Technology (WITU), showcases the latest advancements in precision and versatility on the modern battlefield.

The MOSKIT LR is an extremely adaptable system, designed to neutralize heavily armored vehicles such as main battle tanks and troop carriers, as well as hovering helicopters. Its flexibility is one of its main assets, as it can be mounted on various types of platforms, including vehicles and helicopters, making it a versatile solution for military forces. Additionally, the system is also available in a portable version, carried by two soldiers, which enhances its operational flexibility and mobility on the field.

From a technical standpoint, the MOSKIT LR stands out with an impressive operating range of 100 to 5,000 meters, providing commanders with significant tactical options for both close-range and long-range engagements. It is equipped with a tandem hollow-charge warhead, allowing it to effectively penetrate armor equipped with reactive protection systems (ERA), with an estimated penetration capacity of 700 to 800 mm behind the ERA. This feature is crucial in modern combat scenarios where enemy forces may employ advanced countermeasures.

The system offers several operational modes, including “fire-and-forget” and “fire-and-correct” guidance modes, providing the operator with great flexibility depending on the combat situation. The “fire-and-forget” mode is particularly advantageous, as it allows operators to launch the missile and then reposition or prepare for other actions without needing to maintain lock-on to the target. The “fire-and-correct” mode, on the other hand, enables real-time trajectory adjustments of the missile, thereby increasing accuracy in complex combat environments.

Each missile, housed in its transport and launch container (PTS), weighs 12 kg, and the entire system, including a tripod, weighs 26 kg. Its observation and targeting device (POC), integrated into the system, allows for precise target acquisition and missile guidance, ensuring that even at maximum range, the missile can strike its target with great accuracy. The missile’s 120 mm caliber and total length of 1,250 mm contribute to its powerful impact and long-distance effectiveness.

Poland’s focus on developing national defense technologies has been reinforced by systems like the MOSKIT LR, which provide the country with greater autonomy and flexibility in adapting these systems for various military applications. This trend was evident throughout MSPO 2024, where Polish defense manufacturers, such as Mesko and PGZ, showcased numerous innovations aimed at strengthening both national and international defense capabilities.

The exhibition, which featured 769 exhibitors from 34 countries, underscored the growing importance of defense collaboration in Europe and beyond. Systems like the MOSKIT LR are not only crucial to Poland’s defense strategy but also represent a significant offering for export markets, particularly in regions where armored warfare and mobile defense solutions remain critical.

This presentation at MSPO 2024 highlights Poland’s growing role as a leader in the development of advanced missile systems and its strategic importance on the European defense stage.
