Turkish Multirole Helicopter TAI T625 Gökbey Presents at SAHA 2024 After its First International Flight

The TAI T625 Gökbey, a multirole helicopter designed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), was showcased at the SAHA 2024 exhibition in Istanbul. This model is part of Türkiye’s efforts to strengthen its aerospace capabilities by developing a versatile helicopter capable of meeting both civilian and military needs. The Gökbey completed its maiden flight on September 6, 2018, and is currently undergoing certification for future operational deployment. Recently, the T625 Gökbey achieved a significant milestone by performing its first international flight during the Farnborough International Airshow 2024 in the United Kingdom on July 22, 2024.

The T625 Gökbey is the first multirole helicopter developed under the National Helicopter Program, which was initiated by a decision of the Defense Industry Executive Committee (SSİK) on June 15, 2010. This program aims to address the utility helicopter needs of the Turkish Armed Forces and other national institutions by creating an entirely indigenous platform. The project builds on the expertise gained from the ATAK Program, another major Turkish aerospace initiative, particularly in areas such as transmission, rotor systems, landing gear, and avionics, all developed with national resources.

The Gökbey is designed to operate efficiently in extreme conditions, including high altitudes and elevated temperatures, both day and night, and in complex geographical environments. This helicopter is versatile enough to be used for various missions, such as VIP transport, cargo transport, air ambulance services, search and rescue operations, and offshore transport missions.

In terms of propulsion, the T625 is powered by two indigenously developed TEI TS1400 engines, which provide 1,419 horsepower each. During the Farnborough International Airshow 2024, this helicopter demonstrated its capabilities in a seven-minute flight demonstration, marking its first international appearance. The T625 highlighted Türkiye’s competitive capabilities in aviation and generated increasing interest for future exports.

Technically, the Gökbey features a main rotor with a diameter of 13.20 meters and an overall length of 15.87 meters. It has a maximum takeoff weight of 6,050 kg and a standard fuel capacity of 1,020 kg, which can be extended with an additional external fuel tank of 280 kg. The aircraft can carry up to 12 passengers in addition to its two crew members, making it well-suited for both civilian and military missions.

The T625 Gökbey is currently undergoing testing and certification, including with the European Aviation Safety Authority (EASA) and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Three Gökbey helicopters in serial production are scheduled for delivery to the Gendarmerie General Command. These helicopters, produced with national resources and facilities, are intended for both domestic and international users, further reinforcing Türkiye’s position in the global aerospace market.

Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) is a leading player in Türkiye’s aerospace industry, specializing in the design, development, production, and modernization of aerial systems for both civilian and military applications. Its expertise spans aircraft, helicopters, drones, and satellites, as well as offering advanced engineering and maintenance services. Through programs like the T625 Gökbey helicopter and the KAAN fighter jet, TAI has established itself as a national and international leader in the development of cutting-edge aerospace technologies, contributing to Türkiye’s competitiveness in the global defense market.
