Modernized “Leopard 2A4” main battle tanks and “Ulan” infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) have been handed over to the Austrian Army.
Polygonjournal reports, citing the Austrian Ministry of Defence, that a ceremony marking the handover was held in Großmittel with the participation of Austrian Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner.
The modernization programme is aimed at enhancing the combat capabilities of Austria’s mechanized forces and adapting its armored units to the requirements of the coming years. The programme is being implemented as part of the “ÖBH 2032+ Development Plan”.
Modernization of the Austrian Army’s “Leopard 2A4” tanks began in 2023. As part of the programme, outdated components are being replaced, the tanks’ night-fighting capability is being restored, and the turret’s hydraulic system is being replaced with an electric drive.
The “Ulan” IFVs are also undergoing extensive modernization. The vehicles’ optical and electronic components are being upgraded, their electrical systems are being repaired, and various elements of the running gear are being replaced.
