Production of SM-3 IB and SM-3 IIA Missiles to Be Increased in the US
The US Department of War has signed two framework agreements with “Boeing” and “RTX” to increase the production of “Standard Missile-3 Block IB” (SM-3 IB) and “Standard Missile-3 Block IIA” (SM-3 IIA) missiles.
Polygonjournal reports, citing the US Department of War, that the agreements provide for expanding production capacity for the key components of both missiles.
The move is intended to strengthen the US Navy’s ship-based ballistic missile defense capabilities.
It should be noted that the SM-3 IB and SM-3 IIA missiles are key components of the US “Aegis” ballistic missile defense system. Launched from ships, these missiles are used to defend against ballistic missiles and form a core element of the United States’ sea-based missile defense capabilities.
