The total cost of the US Navy’s program to build the new Trump-class nuclear-powered warships (BBGN) is projected to reach $275 billion.
Polygonjournal reports that this was stated in a report published by the US Congressional Budget Office.
According to the report, the total cost of the program covering the period from 2027 to 2056 is estimated at approximately $275 billion in 2026 dollars. The first nuclear-powered warship to be built under the program is expected to cost around $23 billion. The average cost of the 15 warships planned for procurement by 2056 is projected to be slightly more than $18 billion per vessel.
According to the assessment, the US Navy’s 2027 shipbuilding plan envisages a significant increase in the procurement of large surface combatants compared to the 2025 shipbuilding plan. As a result, the average annual funding required for the acquisition of ships in this category is expected to rise from approximately $11 billion to $19 billion.
The report emphasizes that by 2035, the displacement of large surface combatants to be produced by shipyards will more than double. Overall, the displacement of large surface combatants is expected to increase by 60 percent, while that of small surface combatants is projected to decrease by approximately 40 percent.
It is noted that such a substantial increase in the construction of large surface combatants could create significant production and industrial challenges for the US shipbuilding industry.
