The Netherlands Procures New FFI – Future Fast Interceptors
The Dutch ministry of defense (MoD) signed a contract with De Haas shipyards for the production of 13 new fast crafts as part of the FFI (Future Fast Interceptors) program meant to replace the FRISC (Fast Raiding, Interception and Special Forces Craft) RHIBs on March 10th.
The Royal Netherlands Navy operates 48 FRISCs. While a part will be replaced by the new FFIs, another one will be modernized. In addition, some number of FRISC vessels for amphibious landings are being replaced in a different way.
According to the Dutch MoD, the new boats will be “faster and more heavily armed than the Frisc’s“. Indeed, the FFI seem able to carry two machine guns, one at the bow and another at the stern. They will also be stealthier thanks to lower engine noise. Regarding the comfort requirement, it made its way through as the modified FRISC and the FFI should feature a reduction in the physical load on the crew and passengers. They will be fitted with improved shock-absorbing seats and FFI will get a shock impact sensor. Furthermore, the FFI will get a powerful electro-optic system and a high-speed navigation system. The vessel also offers space for more passengers. The FRISC is limited to 8 passengers on board, while the FFI there will be able to transport 12 including the pilot.
“The FFIs will be added to the inventory of the Royal Netherlands Army and the Netherlands Maritime Special Operations Force (NLMARSOF) of the Marine Corps of the Royal Netherlands Navy.”

The first vessels are expected to be delivered to the navy in 3.5 years.
