RENK to supply transmissions for new Latvian fighting vehicles

RENK Group AG has secured a follow-on order for 42 HSWL-256B transmissions to equip AJAX-based HUNTER infantry fighting vehicles for Latvia. The deal brings Latvia’s total order for RENK transmissions to 84 units, underscoring growing Baltic investment in advanced armored mobility.

The latest agreement follows Latvia’s €387 million ($453 million) contract with General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) for 42 additional HUNTER vehicles, formally signed in June. The HUNTER platform, based on the British AJAX / ASCOD family, has become central to Latvia’s defense modernization strategy as it strengthens NATO’s eastern flank.

“The expansion of the order underscores the NATO country’s great confidence in RENK’s product portfolio,” the German company said in a statement.

The HSWL-256B transmission, already fielded in British Armed Forces vehicles, is designed for armored platforms in the 35- to 45-ton weight class. Delivering 800 kW (1,100 horsepower), the compact, robust gearbox supports high levels of mobility and survivability in modern combat environments.

RENK said production will take place at its Augsburg headquarters, with deliveries set to begin in 2026. Earlier this month, RENK added two new international customers for its AJAX transmission, expanding its footprint in NATO and allied markets.

“The HSWL-256B has proven itself in mission-critical operations, and this order reflects the growing demand for reliable drive solutions in the Baltic region,” the company noted.

Latvia’s partnership with RENK and GDELS highlights a broader trend among European nations investing heavily in tracked armored platforms and support systems as tensions rise along NATO’s borders with Russia.
