Serbia Shows new M-84AS3 Tank With Active Protection System

Serbia has showcased its most advanced main battle tank to date, the M-84AS3, during the “Strength of Unity” military parade.

The event highlighted Belgrade’s ongoing efforts to modernize its armored forces while maintaining a complex balance between aspirations for European Union membership and defense cooperation with partners ranging from France and Israel to China and Russia.

The M-84AS3 is a deep modernization of the M-84 platform, itself a Yugoslav variant of the Soviet-designed T-72. According to details shown at the parade, the tank is equipped with a new fire-control system and an integrated suite of domestic laser and radar warning receivers. The vehicle is further enhanced by the addition of a remote-controlled 12.7 mm weapon station and a soft-kill active protection system designed to defeat incoming guided munitions.

Design changes include structural reinforcements and upgraded armor protection. The rear of the hull and the turret are now fitted with cage armor, while the frontal plates retain additional armor packages previously applied. Serbian officials underscored that the new version surpasses most upgrade variants of the Soviet-era T-72 and is positioned on par with Russia’s T-90M, the latest modernization in that family of tanks.

The debut of the M-84AS3 reflects Serbia’s intent to extend the relevance of its armored fleet with locally developed solutions. By integrating indigenous fire-control technologies and protection systems, Belgrade aims to reduce reliance on imported subsystems while demonstrating a degree of defense industrial autonomy.

The modernization program also aligns with Serbia’s broader military procurement strategy, which has included acquisitions and deals with multiple foreign partners despite sanctions imposed on Russia over its war in Ukraine. By publicly presenting the M-84AS3, Serbia highlighted its capacity to blend legacy Soviet-based platforms with newer domestic and foreign technologies to achieve a more survivable and competitive battlefield asset.

During the parade, which marked the Day of Serbian Unity, Freedom and the National Flag, the M-84AS3 was presented alongside other armored and electronic warfare systems. The display reinforced both symbolic and operational messages: that Serbia continues to modernize its armed forces while signaling independence in defense policy choices.
