U.S. Army Awards Contract for AN/PEQ-15 İnfrared Systems

L3 Technologies has been awarded a firm-fixed-price contract worth $20,5 million for the production of AN/PEQ-15 infrared illuminators, also known as Advanced Target Pointer/Illuminator/Aiming Lights (ATPIAL).

The U.S. Army Contracting Command at Detroit Arsenal, Michigan, made the award on October 21, 2025.

According to contract details, the procurement was conducted through a competitive process, with bids solicited via the internet and one offer received. The estimated completion date for the program is September 1, 2027. Work locations and funding allocations will be determined with each individual order issued under the contract.

The AN/PEQ-15 is a widely used electro-optical aiming system deployed across the U.S. Army and other branches for low-light and nighttime operations. The device combines infrared illumination and laser designation capabilities into a single unit that can be mounted on individual weapons, enabling precise aiming in both visible and infrared spectrums.

The ATPIAL system provides enhanced targeting for soldiers using night vision equipment, allowing for accurate engagement of targets in environments with limited visibility. The compact design and modular compatibility with standard infantry weapon platforms have contributed to its broad adoption across dismounted units, special operations forces, and conventional ground elements.

While the contract announcement did not specify the total quantity to be delivered under the agreement, the contract’s firm-fixed-price structure and multi-year timeline indicate sustained support for current inventory levels and potential deployment in new formations.

The U.S. Army continues to invest in legacy targeting technologies such as the AN/PEQ-15 even as it introduces more advanced integrated optics. These systems remain relevant due to their reliability, simplicity, and proven performance across multiple theaters of operation. The latest award reinforces the Army’s focus on sustaining baseline combat capabilities while expanding next-generation development.

L3 Technologies, a long-standing supplier of electro-optical and sensor solutions to the Department of War, will fulfill the work under Contract Number W56HZV-24-D-0022. The agreement falls under the Army’s broader procurement strategy for soldier-worn targeting equipment and individual weapon enhancements.
