Estonia Receives new South Korean-made K9 Howitzers
The Estonian Ministry of Defense said Monday that six new K9 “Thunder” self-propelled howitzers have arrived in the country as part of Estonia’s ongoing effort to expand its long-range artillery capabilities and strengthen its defense posture.
The systems, produced in South Korea by Hanwha Defence, are being integrated into Estonia’s growing artillery fleet as regional security concerns continue to drive investments across the Baltic states.
In a statement shared Monday, the MoD said, “The newly arrived K9 ‘Thunder’ Howitzers reflect our long-term commitment to readiness, resilience, and cooperation. Estonia invests in security because our freedom is worth defending.”
According to the Estonian Center for Defense Investments (RKIK), the delivery is part of a broader acquisition program that includes 36 K9 units purchased from Hanwha Defence at a cost of approximately $138 million. Estonia’s Defense Forces are set to field the new equipment after required upgrades and testing are completed.
As noted by RKIK, the six vehicles will undergo modifications to ensure reliable operation in Estonia’s climate and command structure. Local defense company GoCraft is responsible for the adaptation work, which includes new communication systems, environmental adjustments, and added storage capacity for soldiers’ equipment. Company officials say these upgrades allow the K9 platforms to operate reliably in harsh winter conditions while supporting the communication standards used by Estonian units.
The howitzers will be handed over to the artillery regiment of the Estonian Defense Forces division once the modification phase is complete. Estonia has been expanding the regiment in recent years, citing the need for improved long-range firepower and rapid response capability. The service said in an earlier release that the upgrades carried out domestically help sustain local industry involvement and ensure faster maintenance cycles.
Six additional K9 units are expected to arrive next year. According to RKIK, the follow-on deliveries remain on schedule, and Estonia is preparing necessary infrastructure and training programs to support the expanding fleet. Earlier deliveries have already been fielded and are in active use within the Estonian Defense Forces.
The K9 Thunder, manufactured by Hanwha Defence, is widely operated throughout Asia and Europe. The system has become one of the most rapidly adopted self-propelled howitzers among NATO partners due to its range, mobility, and ease of integration with existing command-and-control networks.
