Rheinmetall Opens New Facility for Large-Calibre Gun Production in the UK

German defence company Rheinmetall has officially opened its new UK Gun Hall manufacturing facility in Telford, United Kingdom.

Poliqonjurnal reports, citing Rheinmetall, that the opening marks the resumption of independent large-calibre gun production in the UK.

The UK Gun Hall facility is part of Rheinmetall’s investment of more than £200 million in its UK operations over the past five years. This investment demonstrates the company’s long-term commitment to strengthening the British defence industrial base. It complements Rheinmetall UK’s work on the Boxer infantry fighting vehicle, the Challenger 3 main battle tank and capabilities intended for future land forces. The Gun Hall is a tangible example of the industrial partnership established between the UK and Germany under the Trinity House Agreement.

The facility will manufacture 120 mm and 155 mm gun systems, including systems intended for Challenger 3 tanks and future artillery platforms. The production area covers 11,500 square metres. Once full production capacity is reached, the facility will be capable of manufacturing up to 245 gun barrels annually across both calibres, as well as more than 50 breech mechanisms.

The facility has been designed to meet growing demand in the UK, NATO member states and international markets, with the potential to expand its production capacity. This will strengthen collective deterrence, enhance industrial resilience and reinforce the UK’s contribution to European and NATO security.
