IAI Introduces New Wind Demon Air-Surface Cruise Missile at Farnborough 2024

On July 23, 2024, Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) unveiled its new Wind Demon air-surface cruise missile at FARNBOROUGH AIR SHOW, combining new capabilities based on years of experience in missiles and loitering munition development.

The WIND DEMON, developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), is an important step in air-to-surface missile arsenals. Designed to provide an affordable and accurate solution, this long-range cruise missile can strike targets over 200 kilometers away, combining efficiency and cost management.

Launched from an airborne platform such as a helicopter, the WIND DEMON follows a predefined mission plan to engage both mobile and stationary targets. Its ability to fly at extremely low altitudes reduces the risk of detection, disruption, and interception, thus enhancing its operational effectiveness.

Operators can choose from various speed profiles—fast/slow/fast—tailored to specific tactical requirements, allowing for rapid response or discreet approach as dictated by the terrain. This flexibility ensures tactical surprise and enhances the missile’s evasion capabilities.

The WIND DEMON is equipped with technical specifications that guarantee exceptional performance on the battlefield. With a range of over 200 kilometers and a weight of 140 kg, this missile is distinguished by its remarkable accuracy, with a Circular Error Probable (CEP) of just 1 meter. Its guidance and navigation system includes an electro-optical seeker that integrates Imaging Infrared (IIR), High Definition Visualization (VIS), and Semi-Active Laser Homing, which enables precise target identification through Automatic Target Recognition (ATR). Additionally, it is equipped with a Man-in-the-Loop control system that allows human supervision during critical mission phases.

Key features of the WIND DEMON include its affordability, with a low cost per hit ratio ensuring optimal operational efficiency. Its high survivability is bolstered by low-altitude cruising capabilities and an immune navigation system, significantly reducing the chances of detection and interception. Moreover, its selectable velocity and angle of approach provide unprecedented tactical flexibility, increasing its adaptability in various combat scenarios, making it a strategic choice for modern military operations.
