Patriot Launcher Mounted on Littoral Combat Ship
Naval News reported on August 30 that Lockheed Martin has installed a Patriot launcher on the Independence-class Littoral Combat Ship USS Montgomery (LCS-8).
The test aimed to demonstrate a concept of expeditionary air defense, allowing ships operating far from shore and outside carrier strike groups to be reinforced with existing surface-to-air systems.
According to the report, the Patriot PAC-3 MSE launcher mounted on Montgomery represents a continuation of Lockheed Martin’s work on containerized launch systems, including the portable Mark 70 launchers for SM-3 and SM-6 missiles, which have previously been tested on Independence-class littoral ships. The use of container-based launchers is intended to provide flexibility by quickly equipping naval platforms with additional air defense capabilities.
One former Lockheed Martin official claimed the capability demonstrated on Montgomery had been fielded operationally, though Naval News said it was unable to verify that claim.
The pairing of the Patriot system with the USS Montgomery, an Independence-class ship designed primarily for operations in littoral waters, could offer a new expeditionary defense option. Analysts suggested such a capability could be applied in contested areas such as the waters surrounding the Philippines, where ships may need to operate without the protection of carrier groups.
Naval expert Robert du Mont, in response to the news, described the test as an extension of the long-discussed potential of the Independence variant.
“I have always viewed the Independence-variant as a fast pick-up truck – which up until now has had an empty bed,” du Mont said. “I have advocated for over ten years putting things in its bed (huge flight deck and interior bay) that expanded its firepower and surveillance capabilities. The revolution in unmanned vehicles represents a tremendous opportunity to do this. Also, the trend towards containerization of weapons (as this test represents) offers even more opportunities to expand the capabilities of the LCS.”
Lockheed Martin has advanced containerized solutions as part of a broader effort to adapt existing systems for new mission sets. By leveraging established air defense technologies like the Patriot PAC-3 MSE, the company seeks to extend capabilities to platforms that were not originally designed for high-end air defense missions.
The test highlights ongoing experimentation by the U.S. Navy and its industry partners to increase the combat relevance of littoral combat ships. The use of modular and containerized systems has been a recurring theme in attempts to enhance their effectiveness without major redesigns.
While the long-term adoption of Patriot launchers at sea remains uncertain, the demonstration on USS Montgomery signals an effort to explore unconventional applications for established missile defense systems.
