New Serbian Rocket System Debuts in Cyprus

Cyprus’ National Guard has unveiled its newly acquired Tamnava multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) for the first time during a recent military parade.

Developed by Serbia’s state-owned defense company Yugoimport, the Tamnava is a self-propelled, modular system capable of launching both 122mm Grad and 262mm rockets.

According to Yugoimport, the Tamnava MLRS was designed as a fully modular system, allowing crews to switch between different rocket types based on mission requirements.

“Its modularity is demonstrated by the ability to use launch pod containers armed with 262 mm rockets and all variants of the 122 mm rocket,” the company said.

The system is fully automated and integrates an advanced fire control system (FCS) equipped with automatic line-of-sight, inertial navigation (INS), an artillery reconnaissance electronic goniometer, automatic launcher alignment to the reference azimuth, meteorological sensors, and modern communications systems. These features enable the Tamnava to operate autonomously and execute pre-programmed fire missions with minimal crew intervention.

The automation extends to battlefield survivability. The launcher can rapidly deliver a salvo, reposition immediately to avoid counter-battery fire, and continue operations under electronic warfare conditions. The fire control system includes an electronic trigger that supports single or salvo firing modes and provides real-time data on the type and status of loaded rockets, giving commanders and higher headquarters greater situational awareness and logistical oversight.

In its baseline configuration, the Tamnava uses reusable 122mm launch containers but can also be equipped with disposable variants. The platform can carry two spare launch containers, and reloading is handled by a crane mounted directly on the vehicle chassis.

The launcher’s self-protection suite includes laser radiation warning sensors and a smoke grenade launcher. It can engage targets at ranges of up to 70 km with 262mm rockets and 40 km with 122mm rockets, delivering rapid, high-volume firepower against enemy formations, infrastructure, and hardened positions.

The system’s standard loadout consists of two launch modules, each with six tubes for 262mm rockets or 24 tubes for 122mm rockets. A full combat load includes up to 96 rockets in the 122mm configuration or 12 in the 262mm configuration.

The launcher can be operated remotely from a control panel located up to 25 meters away, further improving crew safety during combat operations.

By integrating advanced automation, extended range, and modular payload options, the Tamnava provides Cyprus with a flexible and survivable long-range fires platform. Its ability to switch between calibers, operate autonomously, and reposition quickly makes it a valuable asset for both conventional artillery support and asymmetric engagements.
