
Kongsberg to Equip Swedish CV90s with RS4 Systems
Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace has signed a new contract with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) to deliver PROTECTOR remote weapon stations (RWS) for use on several Swedish Army platforms, including the CV90 (local name Stridsfordon 90) infantry fighting vehicle.
According to a company announcement issued on December 8, the contract is valued at over SEK 400 million ($42.5 million) and includes options to expand the order with additional weapon stations for other vehicle types.
“The acquisition meets the Swedish armed forces’ need for remote-controlled weapon stations for three variants of the CV90, but also other vehicles for the army,” the statement said.
The PROTECTOR RS4 system is an upgraded version of the previously fielded PROTECTOR Nordic variant. It includes enhanced sensor integration, multi-weapon compatibility, and extended engagement ranges—all while allowing operators to remain protected inside the vehicle during operation.
KONGSBERG stated that the new version “adds many important capabilities, including integrated sensors and the ability to operate several different weapon systems at longer distances, while protected in the vehicle.”
In addition to the CV90, Sweden has already procured PROTECTOR systems for other platforms, including the Common Armoured Vehicle System (CAVS) 300—also known as the Patria 6×6—and the Archer 8×8 artillery system.
The CV90, developed by BAE Systems Hägglunds, is a tracked combat vehicle widely used in Europe. Sweden currently operates multiple CV90 variants, including infantry carrier, command, and reconnaissance versions. The addition of the PROTECTOR RS4 is expected to improve crew survivability and precision engagement under varied battlefield conditions.
The Swedish Army has continued modernizing its armored platforms in response to rising tensions in the Baltic region and Sweden’s full NATO accession in 2024. The new systems will be integrated into current formations without major structural changes, due to the modular nature of the PROTECTOR platform.
