Russian Northern Fleet troops prepare for expedition to Novaya Zemlya

The combined expeditionary group composed mainly of the Russian Northern Fleet Coastal Troops servicemen completes the first stage of its preparation for an expedition to some hard-to-reach areas of Yuzhny Island, the Novaya Zemlya archipelago. The expedition is scheduled to be conducted in the second half of May. 

At the end of March, the expedition route to the Novaya Zemlya was reconnoitred from the air. This made it possible to assess the possibilities of delivering material assets and supplies by air, as well as to find out the possibility for the expeditionary detachment vehicles to cross territory given the features of the terrain and climatic conditions.

The reconnoitring results gave the base for making a conclusion about the manoeuvrability of the chosen route for tracked vehicles. The total length of the route, which runs through glaciers, rivers and mountainous terrains of Yuzhny Island, is about 900 kilometres.
